Reinsert the hdd in ps3, boot the console & reinstall firmware as per screen instructions using a CFW PUP. Do I just go through with the format and use the traditional firmware update and everything will be OK? I'm worried because I've seen an official guide saying that I first have to do something from the PS3's browser before I install rebug. I have the latest rebug from the official site and on a USB drive. I happen to have a 500gb HDD lying around and want to use that, but when I insert it into the system and turn it on, it asks for a firmware update, and to format the drive, but I'm too scared to keep going down that path because I don't know if I can end up bricking the thing.
